Description

About the process: "The creation of assemblages is an altogether different, more complex matter, a process that consists of gathering objects on a table, building up small assemblies, tearing things off, collaging, staining, ageing, polishing, waiting, watching, and sometimes almost starting over again. Never is there a finished piece in mind as I start to work...I just stand there and watch as they gradually evolve, trying not to get in the way.

From my years in the film industry as a modelmaker and special effects technician, I developed all sorts of what might be called "hybrid" skills, working with a variety of materials and techniques. One result of this is that I often seem to enjoy combining all kinds of different natural and man-made elements; the more obscure the source of each object, the better chance it will have to "make the cut". There are few rules in this endeavor, but I must be able to declare each piece a finished composition before it leaves the studio, and some never get that far. It is more frustrating, and less efficient in terms of time spent, than the ceramic work, perhaps because clay was there for me before anything else."
